Happy Half Term!

WOW hasn’t that first half term flown past? It will be Christmas before we know it! Thank you to everyone for attending the Parents Evenings this week, we hope you found them useful! It’s always nice to have a chat about how the children are doing, how they are progressing and what they are up to! We as teachers, also love having that 1 on 1 time with you as the drop offs and pick-ups can be a bit chaotic at times!

This week, in English, we have continued our learning about fairy tales and focussed on the loveable story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. We have sequenced the events of the story in the correct order and then we wrote sentences to retell the story using time connectives. We also identified verbs and how the -ed suffix changes the tense of a word to past tense. After the break, we will start with writing our news from our half term. We will be practising writing in full sentences with full stops and capital letters. We will then be exploring rats and using adjectives to describe them. We will also learn our new word aware words and discuss the meaning of the new vocabulary.

This week in maths, we have been focussing on the number 10. We have been using objects to split 10 into 2 parts using Numicon. The children were given some challenges such as “There are 10 animals and they need sorting into two pens. There must always be at least 1 animal in each pen. How many different ways can they be sorted?” We encouraged the children to work systematically and show their working out. We had great fun! After half term, we will be consolidating our knowledge of part, part, whole of the number 10. We will also be using the more than, less than and equals signs to compare the numbers which we have introduced to the children this week.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
