Year 1 Spelling Hub

This page is for ideas and resources to help children in Year 1 practise their spellings at home.

Each week there will be wordsearches and helpful hints. Wordsearches and other resources can be printed, or if this isn’t possible, paper copies will be available from Mrs Sloss.

If your child completes a wordsearch or another printed resource they are welcome to bring it to show Mrs Sloss in the library and get a ‘spelling’ sticker.

Year 1 Spellings – week beginning 8th January 2018

Spellings lists for this half term are on the Year 1 Spelling Hub. Don’t forget – if your child completes a wordsearch, or any other resource which can be printed, they can bring them in to show Mrs Sloss and get a special ‘spelling’ sticker! Wordsearches (there are 2 for each group):           This week’s idea: Divide a whiteboard or sheet of paper into 4 and then as shown below:

Year 1 have their spelling test this week. The children will be tested on the words that they brought home at the start of this half-term and most children will be tested by writing the words in a simple sentence. Wordsearches and ideas for these words are in previous posts.

Week beginning 4 December

Wordsearches:         This week’s ideas: ‘Research has shown that in order to remember a tricky spelling the word should be held above and to the left of the child. This allows the brain to process and can therefore recall the word.’ So an idea is to write the word on a piece of coloured card and your child holds it up above his head.   Backwards Words: Write out the spellings forwards and then backwards. Example: where    erehw

Week beginning 20 November

Wordsearches:         This week’s ideas: Practise spellings in the bath – using foam lower case letters (such as these: Bathtime-Buddies-alphabet-letters) Your child looks at the word, then writes it with their eyes shut. Your child looks secretly at the word, covers it up and then writes the word on your back and you have to work out what the word is.

Wordsearches:           Your child may find the following resource useful. It is a ‘Say it, make it, spell it’ board, which you can print and maybe laminate. You write the word at the top, your child says the word, then they can make the word either with magnetic letters, Playdoh etc, and then they spell it.           One more idea for this week:
