We have 1 hour and 5 minutes to go before our new Year R children have had their first week in school. Some of them are looking rather exhausted and some are still busy outside doing ‘everything’ from running around, balancing on tyres, digging big holes in the woodland area, to sitting in the sandpit imagining they are at the seaside. The children who are inside are busy painting and most of it is going on the paper, playing with the wooden railway, reading books and trying not to nod off, to being slumped in the home corner with a pretend cup of tea. I wonder where you would like to be? My vote would be the home corner with a real cup of tea and possibly a magazine.

Key stage 1 are at the end of their second week and have got used to their new routines. I have just left one class who are doing some lovely calming handwriting practice and another class is outside doing PE in the sunshine. They are also doing an amazing job of looking after the new children in the playground at lunchtime. Thank you for having such delightful children.

We have a school creed that we try to live by and the children enjoying reciting it in assemblies. Year R will not have heard it because we do not make them suffer/attend assembly just yet because the hall floor is rather hard and the assembly goes on far too long for their attention spans. Actually, sometimes it is a bit too long for me and I plan and deliver it! Ask your child if they can say the creed and they will amaze you that many know nearly every word.

Our School Creed

This is our rights respecting school
And we are family.
Let us promise together
That this shall be a peaceful place
Where we love and respect one another
As brothers and sisters.
Let us promise together
That this shall be a happy place
Where we can learn
About the world around us
And reach our goal
To Achieve Happily Together
And try to eat our vegetables, recycle and save energy.

I talked to the children about the last line today because I delivered assembly the old fashioned way and didn’t use a PowerPoint therefore saving energy. A lovely Year 2 girl announced that it was to save electricity and we were all very proud of her. I also introduced a new little pig for our Eat Up corner so that we can work together to see how many tokens we can collect for trying to eat our vegetables. NOT ONE SINGLE child is forced to eat all their food if they don’t like it or feel full, but we do, as I am sure you do at home, encourage the children to eat a balanced diet to keep them healthy. My daughter was quite a fussy eater and wouldn’t eat anything green when she was little, but she had school dinners and thankfully there was often an orange or yellow vegetable that she would eat. It was completely different when I was at school in the olden days and the lovely dinner lady with the beard wouldn’t let you out until you had eaten every single single scrap of gruel. Those were the days.

On the subject of food the lunches do seem to be going down really well and it is excellent that the children, and yourselves as parents, can choose on the day whether they will be ordering a hot lunch or bringing a packed lunch from home. We are very lucky with our H3CS team in the kitchen that they cook and serve a wide range of healthy food for the children to choose from. You can of course read for yourself how they follow Food Standard Guidance on their website but I can hand on heart say they are really well balanced and taste delicious. I have to admit I would like sugar in my cake and salted Lurpak on my bread but that simply isn’t allowed. Nothing is ever greasy or full or additives. Look at me, I am the picture of health for 102 and I have a dinner (lunch to those of you who have dinner in the evening) everyday!

Righty-oh, that’s it for this week. A new menu next week and of course a whole new week of learning. Have a peaceful weekend with your loved ones and do try to eat your vegetables, recycle and save energy.
