History of Fleet (Bumblebee Class)

Today, as a class, we spoke about signs of change we can see from the past. We asked ourselves the question “What has changed since our grandparents were children?” We spoke about Fleet and what we already know about its history. We then spent some time looking at some photos of Fleet from the past. We had a great discussion about how we knew some of the photos were taken a long time ago and some were taken more recently. As a class, we then sequenced the photos from oldest to newest. This led to a lot more talking and … Read more

Tuesday

My legs have just stopped aching after my marathon world record on Sunday. There’s life in the old girl yet. We are continuing our assembly theme this week which is Relationships and how we can be a good friend. The children have such a good understanding of how they can be a good friend but also understand that actually, we might have disagreements with each other, and the important thing is how we handle the disagreements. It is the same for adults isn’t it. After a long day at work I am sure that like me you have to be … Read more

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

I have seen lots of knees and arms this week as we are all determined to embrace the fact that the nights are getting longer and the weather has been rather reasonable. Long may it last and then we can all get ready for snow in July and August. I wonder where I have put my skis? The big TAFF Tidy Up took place on the right date and we are truly thankful for the hard work that everyone put in. Please take time to have a look at our garden before or after school. It is at the pre-school … Read more

Hedgehog Class – P.E lesson

Hedgehog Class had a great gymnastics lesson today where they were travelling in different ways and practising their balancing. They created their own gymnastic sequences individually and in pairs where they could showcase their balancing and travelling skills.  (Mrs Jamfrey)

Meteor Experiment – Bumblebee Class

First of all, we talked about why dinosaurs no longer roam the planet. We talked about the impact on the world when a big meteorite hit and wiped out all of the dinosaurs making them extinct. We decided it would be a good idea to create our own experiment and we answered the question “if the meteorite is further away, will it make a bigger impact?” We used a marble instead of a meteorite as we decided this is probably the safer option. First we did our predictions then we carried out the experiment. We dropped the marble from 3 … Read more

Habitats – Bumblebee Class

The children LOVED creating their own natural habitats suitable for dinosaurs. They thought about the fact that animals need food, water, air and shelter to survive and loved adding features such as volcanos, streams and rock mounds to their creations. Well done Bumblebees! Mrs Ford 🙂

Sumdog Maths Contest

A new South East England Sumdog Maths Contest started today, Friday 15 March and runs until next Thursday 21 March. Children who play the fun maths games during this time are automatically entered into the contest.

Is it Thursday?

There is a vacancy at Tavistock for someone to manage my diary so I know what day of the week/date it really is. I have a paper desk diary, a calendar thing on my computer, my phone, the lovely ladies in the office and I still get my days mixed up. I sent you all to the TAFF tidy up last Saturday and it’s this Saturday! It was so funny on Monday or Tuesday when I spoke to one of the TAFF mums and asked if they had a good turn out at the weekend. She very kindly put me … Read more

Dinosaur Habitats – Mole Class

For our science learning today, we have been learning all about the habitats that different dinosaurs would live in. Can you remember all of the things that living things need in their habitat?  I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for the shoeboxes that were brought in – the children absolutely loved transforming them into their own dinosaur habitat! (Miss Heafford)

Mole Class – Fossils

As part of our science week, we have been looking at the difference between living, dead or never alive. Today, we focussed on fossils. We had a look at some real fossils. There were ammonites, clam shells and even a trilobite! The children handled these very carefully and enjoyed looking at the intricate details. Then, the children had lots of fossil activities to have fun with. I wonder what fun science activities we will get up to tomorrow… (Miss Heafford)

8th March 2024

TAFF have been in school again today helping the children to choose gifts for Mother’s Day on Sunday. I know for a fact that all the helpers have other jobs that they actually get paid for, but time and time again they give up their ‘spare’ time doing lovely things for the children. They have a long list of events in the pipeline and I know you will play your part by supporting the events so that extra money is raised to help Tavistock enrich the learning experiences the children have at school. Thank you to TAFF and thank you … Read more

World Book Day

The children really enjoyed dressing up today!

What a week!

Where do I honestly start with everything that has happened this week? It really has been so exciting in school and the children have had such wonderful learning experiences. At the start of the week I was back in the Roman Empire discussing gladiators because some of the children were informing me that they were playing gladiators at lunchtime. It soon came to pass that it was of course the TV programme Gladiators and we discussed the costumes, muscles and favourite events! One wise little girl was explaining very eloquently that the ‘bad’ gladiator is just like the baddies in … Read more

Dinosaur Footprints

The children in Hedgehog Class had great fun experimenting with different ways of using paints and ‘brushes’ in preparation for painting their papier mache dinosaur footprints. They then made and painted their dinosaur footprints.

World Thinking Day

It was lovely to see so many Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows dressed in their uniforms.

Dinosaur Project Homework – Squirrel Class

For homework at half term Year 2 children were asked to design a poster with a dinosaur ‘theme’ based on their knowledge about dinosaurs.

Museum Walk – Dinosaurs (Mole Class)

What a lovely afternoon we had today! The children loved sharing their incredible dinosaur homework with their friends in Mole Class, as well as getting to see the Foxes’ and Squirrels’ homeworks too! It was amazing seeing so many creative, imaginative posters and we loved learning so many new dinosaur facts! (Miss Heafford)

Half Term

As always this has been a very busy week and I will bullet everything we got up to this week but you will need to look at your year group blogs to get the full picture: We are all exhausted now and ready for 9 days off. A lovely little lunch partner told me it was 9 days and not 7 because you should count both weekends. What a fine idea. I am sure that you have lovely things planned for half term but I reminded the children that they didn’t need to do something expensive every day! They all … Read more

Music Lesson – Bumblebee Class

In music this week, we started off by responding to 2 pieces of classical music. We closed our eyes and listened intently. We spoke about the dynamics of soft and loud. Next, we learnt about the meaning of duration. We used Beethoven’s 5th Symphony as our prime example of long sounds and short sounds. We had a go at using different musical instruments and we listened to whether each instrument created a long or short sound. After that, we had a go at composing and performing a group piece of music focussing on dynamics and duration. In our final lesson, we … Read more

Year 2 – RE lesson

For our RE lesson this afternoon, the Year 2’s all came together to learn how Hindus celebrate the Holi Festival. We built a shrine for the God, Vishnu. We used scarves to symbolise the powdered paint which is thrown during the Holi Festival. We then listened to a traditional piece of Indian music and learnt an Indian dance. I wonder if you can carry on learning it at home… (Miss Heafford) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zodMIu0_CfI

Dinosaur Art – Bumblebee Class

During our art lessons this week, Bumblebee class have loved working in groups to create sculptures of dinosaur footprints. First, we sculpted the shape of the footprint by manipulating paper and newspaper. We used techniques such as rolling, pinching, twisting and squeezing. After that, we used Papier Mache to cover the sculpture. We had lots of fun and we are very excited to paint them after half term. Well done, Bumblebees!

Computing – Bumblebee Class

In computing this term, we have been learning that electronic devices are controlled by inputting functions on a control that have a specific effect on an object. We now know this is called an algorithm. We understand that electronic devices can be used to solve problems by inputting functions. We also understand that a set of instructions can be represented by a flow chart. We have been using BeeBots to input an algorithm for the device to follow. We had a go at creating our own flow chart and asking our peers to following the instructions. (Mrs Ford)

E-Safety Workshop – Year 1

The children loved the visit from Open View Education who came in to talk to us about keeping safe online. The children loved meeting all the characters such as Ola the Owl and Cassie the Cat. We have learnt about keeping safe online such as not sharing personal information and using only kind words. (Mrs Ford)

E-Safety assemblies / workshops

Every child took part in an E-Safety Assembly/workshop today delivered by OpenView Education.

Belonging

We are busy reminding the children about how important it is to make everyone feel that they belong to our school. We are all included and we are all important in our own way. To use the words of one of your lovely children ‘we all belong no matter what shape, size or skin colour we are’. The child wasn’t prompted to say this by any adult and it just made me so proud. We really do live in a world that is so much more tolerant of difference than when I was growing up. People’s minds are open to … Read more

Dinosaur Homework – Bumblebee Class

Bumblebee class have worked very hard at home to create their wonderful dinosaurs for their homework. We had a brilliant ‘Dinosaur in school day’ and the children loved their dinosaurs helping them with their learning. They all did a brilliant job at presenting their dinosaurs to the rest of the class. Well done Bumblebees for working so hard on your homework!
