February at last!

Thank you to all the parents who attended parents evening this week and I hope you found them useful. It’s really nice to have a chat about your child’s progress and for you to hear how they are getting on at school as it’s hard to get a full picture from the children! But they are all smashing it! I can’t believe we are half way through Year 1 already! Doesn’t time fly!

On Thursday, the children loved the visit from Open View Education who came in to talk to us about keeping safe online. The children loved meeting all the characters such as Ola the Owl and Cassie the Cat. We learnt about keeping safe online such as not sharing personal information and using only kind words when speaking to people. Oh and of course not to talk to strangers! The internet is wonderful for so many reasons but it can also be a scary place. Please do your research before allowing your child to have access to online games etc. and make sure full restrictions are turned on!

In English this week, we have continued to use the book ‘Dear Dinosaur’ to explore writing for different purposes. We have been using everything we have learnt to write a sequence of sentences in the form of a letter. Next week we will be learning about the past tense. We will learn that -ed is a suffix that can be added to words to change them into the past tense. We will change words by adding -ed and writing sentences using the -ed words. We will also learn about plurals. We will sort words into plurals and non plurals then we will sort the words into those with -es and those with -s on the end.

In maths this week, we have been learning about addition and how it is the combining of two or more groups. We started the week with using equations to match addition pictures and representations. After that, we applied our understanding to create number stories to match addition equations. We also started to learn how to use number lines to help us with our addition. Next week we will be learning about subtraction and learning about the concept of taking away. We will start the week with using practical resources to take away and we will focus on the language involved when taking away. We will then move on to exploring pictures and representations that show taking away, and we will write equations to match these. After that, we will apply our understanding to create number stories for taking away.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.

Dates:

Friday 2nd February – TAFF Disco
Friday 9th February – Last day of term
Monday 19th February – Back to school

We like to think of ourselves as a friendly and approachable team and if there is anything you have concerns about, please let us know and we will do our best to help.
