May Day

Did anyone else hear that CRAZY thunderstorm on Wednesday night? I nearly fell out of bed it made me jump so much! The lightning was spectacular to watch out the window I must say! Hopefully now we are in May, we will have some sunnier days and not have to take out raincoats and umbrellas everywhere. Next week is a 4 day week due to the bank holiday!

In Maths this week, we have been applying our knowledge of number bonds within 10 to solve problems. We have used resources to show part, part whole for numbers between 5 and 8. We then created part, part whole models and found the missing parts to make the whole numbers. After that, we used our knowledge of facts for 5,6,7 and 8, to solve problems and show our understanding. Next week, we will be continuing to apply our knowledge of number bonds within 10 to solve problems. We will use resources and tens frames to show part, part whole for the numbers 9 and 10. We will then use our number bond knowledge to solve a range of problems and balance equations. During the week, we will also apply our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to complete reasoning problems to develop our explanations.

In our English lessons this week, we continued to use The Magical Garden of Claude Monet to act as a stimulus. In our first session, we wrote a descriptive piece of writing about a picture from the book. We used powerful adjectives to describe the picture and used the suffixes –er and –est to compare different things in the garden. After that, we planned and wrote a letter to Claude Monet to tell him what we liked about his magical garden. We worked hard to use ‘because’ to explain to him why we liked it. Next week, the children will start with their news writing from the bank holiday weekend. We will be using ‘and’ and ‘because’ to extend our sentences. We will then spend the rest of the week focusing on the book ‘Diary of a Spider’ by Doreen Cronin. We will learn what an exclamation sentence is, have a go at spotting one as well as writing our own. Towards the end of the week, the children will be writing a postcard as Grandad spider. They will be using their knowledge from the week and use in their postcard.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.
