Only One You

On Monday morning, we read the story ‘Only One You’ by Linda Kranz and explored the concept of being unique. The author hand painted each rockfish in the story with their own unique markings. The story follows a little rockfish who is getting ready to venture into the big, wide world and so his parents share some important wisdoms that they have gained over the years. After reading the story, we talked about the special messages that were shared and what advice our parents gave us about starting school. During the week, we had a go at painting our own rockfish using the illustrations from the story as inspiration. In understanding of the world, we described the rocks that were used in the story and where the author might have found them geographically. We also looked at some rocks during circle time and sorted them into a variety of different groups (colour, shape, size, texture). Sorting the rocks linked perfectly to our learning in maths where we were learning to sort and match objects. Next week, we will be learning to copy and continue simple AB patterns using songs and natural materials. We will also be practising to compare two quantities to identify which set is bigger/smaller/more/fewer.

Next week, we will be reading the story ‘The Colour Monster’ to develop our emotional literacy skills. If you are not familiar with the story, it follows a little monster who wakes up feeling very confused. His emotions are all over the place; he feels angry, happy, calm, sad and scared all at once. To help him, a little girl shows him what each feeling means through colour.  We will be talking about each of these feelings and our experiences of them. Throughout the week, we will be making some colour monster puppets and sorting different colours according to their associated feeling. We will also be continuing to develop our fine and gross motor skills through Squiggle time and Dough Disco every morning. We have added a Tapestry observation of our first Squiggle Time session for you to see.

We are so glad all parents are now accessing their Tapestry accounts. Please visit your Tapestry account weekly to keep updated with your child’s learning. We really appreciate your engagement with us by commenting and liking posts. Please remember you can also post observations of your own. We love sharing these in class and celebrating the things children do outside of school.

Thank you for reading,

Mrs Foster
