Hoppy Easter!

I can’t quite believe we have reached the end of the spring term, soon to be heading into the summer one. What a crazy year it’s been so far and we have only just reached the end of March! I was writing the date down earlier and still put 2023. That is a forgivable mishap in January but you would have thought that by March, I would be used to writing 2024. On behalf of the entire Year 1 team, we would just like to thank you all for your support. We are so lucky to have such wonderful children and parents who have made this year easier for us. We are so grateful – THANK YOU!

We’ve had so much fun this last week, it’s been so nice to see the children so relaxed, enjoying time chatting to their friends and embracing every task. We’ve seen lots of bunnies, eggs, lambs, baskets and all things Easter! We’ve also been enjoying our Geography and RE lessons.

This week, our English lessons have all been based around RE and learning about the Christian celebration of Easter. The topic itself is called “Welcoming” and we have learnt why and how Jesus was welcomed to the city of Jerusalem. We looked at why Christians celebrate Easter and use a palm cross to remember part of his story. We then learnt about the Easter story itself and rounded off the week with making a few Easter themed creations.

In maths this week, we have been focussing on telling the time. We began our learning with thinking about sequencing time. We sequenced days of the week and the events in our day. We then learnt about telling the time on an analogue clock. We then learnt about o’clock and half past and used this learning to read some times on a clock and also draw different times on a clock. After Easter, we will be learning about multiplication. We will start by using groups with dienes to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Then we will learn to recognise the repeated addition and written the number sentence to match. We will use practical apparatus all week and the language used in the beginning stages of learning multiplication. E.g. lots of, altogether, repeated addition, sets of, times.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.

Dates:

Monday 15th April – Back to school

We like to think of ourselves as a friendly and approachable team and if there is anything you have concerns about, please let us know and we will do our best to help.

Have a wonderful Easter break whatever you are doing. We will look forward to seeing you all in the summer term.

Mrs Ford and the Year 1 team.
