Is That The Sun In The Sky?

What beautiful weather we’ve had for the last few days! It has been so nice after all the dreary, rainy, overcast days we have had. I feel like spring is officially here and it has certainly put a spring in my step! Long may it last! We’ve had another lovely week here in Year 1 at Tavistock. I keep looking at the children and asking myself “When did they get so big?” I can’t believe that after the Easter break, they will be in their last term of Year 1 ready to head into Year 2 and be top of the school. Time really does fly.

In English this week, we started with writing a recount about our science week. We loved looking over the photos and had an in-depth discussion about what we learnt, what we enjoyed and anything we found tricky. In the rest of our lessons, we practised our skills of sentence writing by writing dictated sentences using our Year 1 common exception words. We reminded the children to use full stops, finger spaces and capital letters correctly. Next week, we will also be learning about the Easter story, making Easter cards, plenty of Easter crafts as well as finish off painting our clay fossils. What a fun 4 days we will have before the end of the Spring term!

In maths this week, we started by comparing different lengths and widths. We then measured different objects using non-standards units, such as, pencils, cubes, dinosaurs etc. After this, we moved on to using standard units on a ruler, to measure objects in CMs. Finally, we used all of our measurement skills to solve different problems involving measurement, using non-standard and standard units. Next week, we will focus on telling the time. We will begin our learning with thinking about sequencing time. We will sequence days of the week and the events in our day. We will then learn about telling the time on an analogue clock. We will learn about o’clock and half past and use this learning to read some times on a clock and also draw different times on a clock.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.
