I can’t believe it’s Friday already…

Another busy week has flown by and we’ve seen quite a bit of rain and wind. Windy weather seems to always make the children a bit more excitable, I wonder if it has the same effect on us adults?! Maybe I should think about doing a survey…

This week in Year 2 we started our guided reading groups so we are now working on a full timetable.  Please make sure that reading diaries are in school every day because it may be a day that your child is reading to an adult and we do like to make a comment in the diary for you. Many thanks in advance.

In English, we began our first unit of work based around Rats and the children have been finding out all about these creatures by looking and reading a variety of texts together. We have also been thinking about and using appropriate vocabulary to describe rats and ‘sparkly’ has not been mentioned once this year which is a very good start! The children have looked and talked about the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts and features that you might find in these types of books. I wonder if they could talk to you about it?

In maths, we have been revisiting teen numbers and consolidating knowledge from Year 1. We have worked practically using resources and recorded using cherry diagrams, bar models and number sentences. We continue to count forwards and back from any given number to a 100 to encourage fluency especially with counting backwards. This is a skill that can be practised anytime when you have a free moment with your child.

In our topic work, we are reminding the children about the importance of internet safety by watching and discussing short films in our ICT session and we have now finished our section of history based on The Plague of 1665, all ready to start the Great Fire of London. This coming week each class will have a fabulous history/drama session delivered by an external drama group. The session is always amazing and I’m sure the children will love it.

Things to remember

Every child should bring in a water bottle every day. It is so important to keep our brains and our bodies hydrated with all this learning going on!

Homework has now started on Google Classroom.  It will be posted at 2pm every Friday and homework needs to be uploaded by 2pm the following Friday.  Homework often consolidates the work we have been doing in class and shouldn’t prove a difficult task for your child, as they are just having another practise using the skills learnt in class.

Spellings will continue to be posted at 2pm every Monday.

Morning routine –  Please help your child to read the white board outside before they come in at 8.45 so they can come in and get on with their early morning job as soon as possible.

Have a wonderful weekend whatever you end up doing. I am hoping for sunshine as I really need to get out into the garden for bulb planting and tidying up.

Kind regards,

The Year 2 Team.
