Week two done! (and, thank goodness it’s been a little cooler)

What a great week we have had in Year 2, the children have continued to settle in beautifully and they have been getting to grips with the pace of learning in Year 2 – well done everyone!

This week in English we have been recapping the skills learnt in Year 1.  It’s surprising how much is forgotten over the space of six weeks but hopefully now, memories have been jogged and we’re all set for our brand new English unit next week.

In maths, we have been practising counting forwards and back from 100, really concentrating on crossing over the tens, 71, 70, 69 . We have also been looking at where numbers belong in the number system, can we get a selection of numbers in the right order even when we don’t have all the numbers? Partitioning 2-digit numbers plays an important role in this year’s learning and we have started to look at it this week. To partition a 2-digit number means simply splitting the number into tens and units (or tens and ones.)

Just a few reminders for the beginning of the new school year:

Reading

The children have all received their new home reading books and diaries.  Please ensure your child’s book and diary are in school every day and book change will be every MONDAY.  Your child has also chosen a book from the class boxes, these books are for the children to read or share with a parent at home and your child can change these books themselves when they need a new one.  Reading is such an important skill so please find time a few times a week to listen to your child read their home reading book and remember to let them colour in a star each day to start working towards their reading certificates.  It is really helpful if you could date and sign the diary when you have listened to your child and it is even nicer if you have the time to make a comment!

P.E. is on FRIDAY

Please ensure your child has a full P.E kit in school during term time. The kit should include plimsolls or trainers as we will go outside for our lessons whilst the weather is still being kind.  Long hair needs to be tied back and earrings will need to be covered with tape or not worn on P.E. days. Remember to name all P.E. kit and jumpers.

Homework and Spellings

Spellings and weekly homework is now up and running on Google Classroom. Please see the office if you have any problems with accessing the platform. Spellings will be uploaded every Monday at 2pm with the spelling test being carried out the following Monday.  Homework will be loaded onto GC at 2pm every Friday and completed homework needs to be uploaded by 6pm the following Friday for marking.

Supporting your child at home with their spellings, homework tasks and reading will really help consolidate the learning done in class and give you a flavour of some of the learning we have done that week.

On Monday, we will hit the ground running as we start our full on regular routine which will be a shock to all of us, but I’m sure we will all get used to it very quickly! Please ensure your child is in school promptly as the register is taken at 8.55 so we can begin our learning at 9am.

I think that’s about it for now, have a great weekend and we’ll see you on Monday.

Kind regards

The Year 2 Team
