Jack Frost

This term is flying by but at the same time, January seems to have been going of forever?!? We are however, already half way through the term which means only a few weeks left until February half term. I’ve started to notice a few signs of Spring which hopefully means the weather will be getting warmer soon and we can make the most of the longer days and not having to defrost our cars! The parents evening bookings went live on Sunday for you to book a 10 minute slot to speak to your child’s teacher. If you haven’t already done so, please remember to book as there are still places available. Tuesday the 30th January is our face to face one and Wednesday 31st January is our virtual one. We look forward to seeing you all then!

In English this week, we have been thinking about the sequence of our school day and what it would be like if a dinosaur was coming to our school. We have been exploring the features of an invitation and discussing how we could persuade a T-Rex or a Stegosaurus to visit us. Finally, we used our dinosaur facts from last week to write an invitation to persuade them to come to our school. Next week, we will use the book ‘Dear Dinosaur’ by Chae Strathie and Nicola O’Byrne to explore writing questions. We will be thinking of questions to find out more about different dinosaurs and writing them. Later on in the week, we will be writing an email to thank our dinosaurs to further develop our understanding of writing for different purposes.

In maths this week, we have continued to learn about the place value in different numbers. We have been using a range of apparatus to build, and then draw numbers from 20-50. We spent lots of time talking about how the numbers are built using the appropriate vocabulary of tens and ones. We even included money this week! After that, we used our knowledge of place value to solve problems. Next week, we will be learning about fractions. We will start off the week by learning about halves and quarters, and then use this knowledge to find halves and quarters of shapes. After this, we will apply our learning about halves to find a half of different amounts.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.
