“March”ing into Spring

I love seeing the early signs on Spring this time of year. I like to buy a bunch of daffodils every now and then. If anyone has any tips on how to help daffodils last longer, please send them my way! My friend told me to put a small amount of sugar in with them but that had the opposite affect! Please can I also remind you that the children are welcome to come dressed up as any book character or a colour on Thursday 7th March for World Book Day.

In maths this week, we began the week with recapping place value by reading, building and drawing numbers. We then used this understanding to find 1 more and 1 less of a number that crossed over the tens. After that, used practical resources to find 10 more and 10 less of numbers, and then we recorded our understanding by drawing representations of the numbers in our books.

In English, we continued to focus on the book ‘How to look after your Dinosaur’ by Jason Cockcroft. We started the week by exploring the features of instructions. After that, we planned our instructions and thought about what verbs and time connectives we needed to use in our writing. We then used all we had learnt to write our own instructions on how to look after a pet dinosaur. The results were amazing!

Next week, we are having a Reading Week to celebrate World Book Day. We will be doing fun activities each day such as writing book reviews, some Elmer the Elephant patch work art, using adjectives to describe an elephant, writing a letter to an author and asking any questions they may have about the book, making puppets etc. The children love these weeks and enjoy embracing their creative side. Keep an eye on the website for photos!

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.
