Twit-Twoo

On Monday morning, we read the story Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. The story follows three baby owls who wake one night to find that their mother is gone. Scared and alone, they wait patiently for her to return. As we read the story, we talked about how the baby owls were feeling and made predictions about what would happen next. Moreover, we talked about times we have been brave like the little owls in the story. In literacy, we drew a picture of a time that we were brave and used our initial sounds to add labels. The children are becoming more confident identifying the initial sounds in words. We are really impressed!

In maths, we have been learning to read and represent the numerals 1, 2 and 3. After half term, we will be practising to recognise an amount to three without counting and will also explore the composition of 2 and 3.

We have been so impressed with how well the children have engaged with their phonics homework on Tapestry! Well done! They have learnt 12 sounds this term and are beginning to use these sounds to read simple words and write labels. Next term, we will move on to learning the sounds ‘u’ and ‘b’ and will continue to practise reading simple words in our WordTime sessions. Keep up reading at home over the half term and look for opportunities to read letters while out and about.

Next term our new topic is Ticket to Ride and is based all around transport. In the first two weeks, we will be reading  the story The Naughty Bus by Jan Oke. One of my favourites! The story follows a little boy who receives a red, London bus as a present and takes it on a brilliant adventure around his home. During the first week, we will be locating the city of London on a map and discovering how buses have changed from long ago to now. We will also be using junk modelling resources to make our own London buses, as well as painting buses and crafting buses!

As mentioned in Parentmail, we will be introducing PE into our timetable for the first time after half term. Therefore, children will need to have a PE kit in school by Friday 3rd November ready for Tuesday 7th November. Their kit needs to include black shorts, a white t-shirt and some plimsols or trainers.

We hope the children have a wonderful and restful half term and look forward to seeing them on Tuesday 31st October.

Thank you for reading,

Mrs Foster on behalf of the Year R team
