We love Elmer!

What a fabulous World Book Day we had on Thursday. As always, it was great to see the children all dressed up. Such an array of costumes and imagination across the year group, well done everyone! I probably shouldn’t say this, but my personal favourites were the oompah lumpas – the green wigs and bright orange faces made me smile so much! I hope it wasn’t too hard getting the orange face paint off…

For our special day, we decided to concentrate on Elmer the elephant stories and the uniqueness of us all. We looked at acrostic poems and had a go at writing one all about Elmer, the children came up with such lovely ideas. We then talked about how we are all special and unique and then thought about how our classmates are all special and unique too, and we wrote down our thoughts to create a lovely montage. In the afternoon, we all had a go at paper weaving, it’s not as easy as it looks, but we persevered and did pretty well in the end, well done Year 2! It was a wonderful day and of course, it’s always a good idea to celebrate the pleasure of reading.

During the rest of the week, we carried out our latest Big Write. It was a descriptive dinsosaur piece using effective use of adjectives and expanded noun phrases. The children worked hard to include vocabulary that involves the senses and wrote in the first person and the end results were a pleasure to read. In maths, we were looking at positional language, left, right, forwards, backwards, clockwise, anti-clockwise, quarter turn, half turn etc.

Here is a little activity/video to recap some of the learning if you would like to view it with your child. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zys8r2p

Next week is Science Week, which we are all very much looking forward to, so white coats at the ready as we come off normal curriculum to fully emerge ourselves in the subject.

This Sunday is Mother’s Day so have a wonderful day Mums, and a big thank you to our lovely TAFF for organizing the shopping experience in Dormouse Nest for our children. The children are always so excited when they come back to class with their shopping bag, it’s all very grown up! I hope you all get a lie in and possibly a cuppa in bed…

Until next week,

The Year 2 Team.
