Whizz, Pop, Bang!

Welcome back! I hope you had a nice relaxing half term. We were quite lucky with the weather being nice for most of it! It’s noticeably turning colder now and what a difference it’s made with the clocks going back an hour! Dare I say it, now we are in November, Christmas will be here before we know it! I loved hearing all the children’s Halloween stories – what they dressed up as etc. I never really remember Halloween being a big event when I was their age but I love seeing how excited they get about it! LOVED the children’s firework hair today! They looked fab! Enjoy any firework displays this weekend. I am planning on going to Calthorpe if the weather improves!

We started off the week with writing our news from our half term in English. We practised writing in full sentences with full stops and capital letters. We spent the latter part of the week exploring rats, photos of rats, drawings of rats etc. and we thought of as many adjectives as we could to describe them. We also learnt our new word aware words on Friday and we discussed the meaning of the new vocabulary. Next week, we will begin the with distinguishing between fact and fiction by looking at pictures of rats from fiction and non-fiction books. We will then use our word aware words to describe rats and write sentences about their appearance. After that, we will use a collection of non-fiction books to research facts about rats. We will find out about their diet, habitat and how they behave. We will then use this information to write sentences to create a poster about rats.

In maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of part, part, whole of the number 10. We have also be using the more than >, less than < and equals = signs to compare the numbers which we have introduced to the children this week. Next week, we will be learning all about teen numbers. We will be learning to recognise a teen number as 10 and how many more by recognising the place value of each digit. We will be reading, writing and representing teen numbers in a variety of different ways. We will use straws, Dienes and cherry diagrams to represent the teen number and then start to represent the numbers in a pictorial and more abstract way.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
