Remembrance Day

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

We had a class assembly on Thursday where we had a discussion with the children about Remembrance Day. We spoke about why we wear poppies and what they represent, the significance of the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month and why and what we do during the two minute silence. The children were respectful and took it seriously, which was very touching to be part of.

This week in English, we have been distinguishing between fact and fiction by looking at pictures of rats from fiction and non-fiction books. We then used our word aware words to describe rats and write sentences about their appearance. After that, we used a collection of non-fiction books to research facts about rats. We found out about their diet, habitat and how they behave. We then used this information to write sentences and we created posters about rats.  Next week, we will be having a skills week. We will be really focussing on how to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces correctly to write sentences.

In maths, we have been learning all about teen numbers. We have been learning to recognise a teen number as 10 and how many more by recognising the place value of each digit. We have been reading, writing and representing teen numbers in a variety of different ways. We used straws, dienes and cherry diagrams to represent the teen number and then started to represent the numbers in a pictorial and more abstract way. Next week, we will be continuing our learning all about teen numbers. We will be learning to recognise a teen number as 10 and how many more by recognising the place value of each digit. We will be reading, writing and representing teen numbers in a variety of different ways. We will use numicon and money to represent the teen number and start to represent the numbers in a more abstract way. At the end of week, we will carry out an assessment to see how much we can remember from the last two weeks.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.
