A Fun Topic Week

The children have absolutely loved topic week! Our main areas of focus have been Science and Geography. We have looked at our 5 senses, labelled parts of the human body, looked at maps and atlases, the UK, healthy eating, hygiene as well as carrying out some science experiments. One of the experiments included building a parachute using different materials to see which material would float the longest. The children had my make their predictions and then choose a material to build their parachute. It was really interesting so hear why the children had chosen different materials. They absolutely loved it.

As you probably already know, we have our Christmas plays coming up very soon! The children are super excited and have been busy learning all the songs in school this week. You will have received a slip at some point with your child’s costume for the performance. Please do not go spending lots of money on costumes, use bits you’ve already got at home such as a tea towel for a shepherds head! We look forward to seeing you on the day of the performance (dates listed below).

Next week in English, we will be continuing to learn how to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces correctly to write sentences. Focussing on these skills have really improved the children’s writing and they have all made so much progress. Next week in maths, we will be learning about subtraction and the concept of taking away. We will start the week with using practical resources to take away and we will focus on the language involved when taking away. We will then move on to exploring pictures and representations that show taking away, and write expressions and equations to match these. After that, we will move on to learning about doubling. We will use practical resources to double numbers and then move on to representing doubles using pictures and equations.

Just a few reminders:

  1. Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  2. Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  3. Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  4. Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  5. Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.
