A new author of the blog!

Hello! It’s Miss Heafford here, I am your new blogger! I hope you all had a wonderful half term break and had lots of fun, whether you were busy carving pumpkins or just catching up on some much-needed sleep! Wasn’t it lovely having an extra hour in bed on Sunday…

What an amazing first week back we have had in Year 2! On Tuesday afternoon, the children loved visiting the other Year 2 classrooms to go on a ‘museum walk’. This gave the children the opportunity to share their homework with their friends, which they absolutely loved! Thank you for supporting your children for this lovely homework activity – what a creative bunch you are!

This week, in our English lessons, we have been looking at a brand new text called Vlad and The Great Fire of London. At the beginning of the week, the children were developing their prediction and inference skills. The children became detectives to look at the illustrations from the story to discuss and predict what they thought might happen in the story. The children are working towards writing their own diary entries in the next couple of weeks. During the week, we have been looking at the features of a diary (e.g. writing in the first person, dates and emotions…).

In maths, we have been learning about the multiples of 2 and 5. The children were writing the repeated addition number sentences. For example, 6 lots of 2 would be the same as 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2. We were also drawing arrays to match (hip-hip-ARRAY). Later in the week, they were introduced to the multiplication symbol. We referred to this as ‘times’, ‘lots of’ and ‘groups of’.

The children have been busy transforming their shoeboxes into houses. This has supported their history learning about our topic this term, The Great Fire of London. The children had to think about the material that would have been used to make houses in 1666, and these will make a great display to show how cramped the streets would have been in this time. By the end of the session, we were all covered in paint, glue and tissue paper, but it was all worth it!

The children who will be performing at Fleet Festivities in the choir, had their first rehearsal on Thursday. We apologise if they come home humming a Christmas tune at the start of November!

It was amazing to see so many incredible hair styles and hats for Firework Hair Day on Friday! Good luck for getting all the hair dye and glitter out later…! Thank you so much for all of your generous TAFF donations this week.

If you have put your name down as a parent helper for next week, you will need to sign in at the office before your timetabled slot and we are very much looking forward to welcoming you into class.

Things to remember:

  • Please make sure all children have warm coats in school everyday now as we are now in November and we do always try and go out at play times (even if it is drizzling!).
  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled, including gloves and hats!
  • Please send your child’s water bottle, reading log and reading book into school every day.
  • Our Year 2 PE day is on a Friday. Please make sure your PE kit is back in school.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday.
  • Spelling tests are on Monday. Please check your child’s bag to see the results and see if there are any words that they need to practise further.
  • Homework tasks are due in on Friday.

Have a lovely weekend and stay safe if you are going to a firework event,

Miss Heafford and the Year 2 team J
