Happy Friday everyone!

Firstly, thank you all so much for your generous TAFF donations this week for both the Tombola and Bag2School scheme.  Thank you TAFF for organising another great event, we are very grateful for all of your hard work and everything you do for our school!

There has been lots of lovely learning going on in Year 2 this week… In English, the children have been writing their own rascally recipes for revolting cakes, based on the book The Rascally Cake. They have had great fun using adjectives to describe the list of rancid ingredients in their recipes and have been super imaginative with their ideas. They have used cauldrons, dustbins and toilets for their mixing bowls and have added gruesome ingredients such as pink, wriggly worms, green slime, and smelly socks! They have worked so hard to include adverbs, imperative verbs and adverbial phrases to add detail to their writing and have written fantastic final pieces. We have loved this book and have thoroughly enjoyed learning how to write a set of instructions. Sadly we have now come to the end of this unit but we will be starting an exciting new topic next week in English, where we will be building up to write a Dinosaur story! In maths, we have been learning to use a partitioning method to add two digit numbers together. We have been adding the tens together, then the units, then combining them to find the total. For example:

34+22=?

30+20=50

4+2=6

50+6=56

We have used the same method when subtracting, where there is no bridging required. This has allowed the children to use their place value skills and practise their number fluency. We have also looked at the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and used these skills to check whether calculations are correct. The children have used dienes and part-part-whole diagrams to solve the problems practically and then shown their working out in their books.

History has been great fun this week as we have been learning about the different dinosaur periods. We have used books and Ipads to research each of the three eras and have created timelines to record the different events. The National History Museum website has been very insightful and we have enjoyed using it to find out new dinosaur facts. It might also come in useful for next Friday’s homework task… SPOILER ALERT ‼️

In computing, we have been programming the BeeBots and inputing a set of instructions for them to follow. We are getting better at remembering which way is left and right so there hasn’t been as many BeeBot collisions this week, hooray! The children have also used their own QR codes to log into Sumdog to practise their maths skills, isn’t technology amazing!?

Next week we have lots more things to look forward to: story writing, measuring in maths and Parents Evening. Face to face parents evening will take place on Tuesday and virtual parents evening will take place on Wednesday. Just a gentle reminder to please listen to your children read their home reading book each week, even just a few pages each night. Sadly if there is no record that the book has been read then the teachers will not change the book on a Monday. We would love to see them reading their book at least 2-3 times a week so please record in their diaries, just a date and signature is fine :)

Thank you, have a fabulous weekend everyone, enjoy the 2 day rest.
