Here comes the glitter…!

Happy December! Christmas has arrived at Tavistock! There are Christmas trees, baubles and a trail of sparkly tinsel everywhere… As much as I love the magic of Christmas, I can’t say I’m enjoying these cold and frosty mornings, especially having to de-ice the car! But maybe we’ll be lucky enough to have a white Christmas this year, brrrr!

It is almost SHOWTIME! All classes have been busy practising their Christmas show. I know that all of the teachers are feeling incredibly proud of the children, as they are all working so hard. It is so wonderful to see all of the performances coming together now! A huge thank you for bringing in all of the amazing costumes – they will look amazing on stage! We will hopefully see lots of you in the audience, but do not worry if you are unable to make it, the show will be posted on Google Classroom.

The Christmas show times are below:

  • Squirrel class – Monday 4th December 9:20am
  • Fox class – Monday 4th December 2:15pm
  • Mole class – Tuesday 5th December 2:15pm

Around all of the singing and rehearsals, we have been doing some learning… I promise!

We started off the week with a brilliant SCARF session, which was run by the lovely Sarah. SCARF is a charity provider of PSHE and wellbeing education in primary schools and the children always look forward to their visits. SCARF stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship. This time, their session was all about gratitude and mindfulness. The children loved going into a huge tent which was set up with calming fairy lights and, of course, Harold the giraffe was there to see them again!

In our English lessons, the children have been working towards writing their own book reviews for The Highway Rat by Julia Donaldson. On Monday, the children brought in their favourite book to share with their classmates. It was lovely hearing why they chose to bring in their book and the reasons why they like it so much. Later on in the week, the children have been identifying the features of a book review and have practised writing a character description for the Highway Rat.

In our maths lessons, the children have been using unstructured number lines to add a single-digit number to a double-digit number. This has required them to use their knowledge of ‘bridging to the nearest 10’ to help them to work out the answer.

26 + 6 =

This method really emphasised the importance of being fluent with number bonds to 10, as we apply them to larger numbers too. Please keep practising these at home! Next week, we will be subtracting using this method.

Have a lovely weekend, see you next week!
