How Does Your Garden Grow?

We’ve had a lovely week here in Year 1. We have been enjoying lots of exciting science lessons in the afternoons. We started the week by learning about what a plant needs to grow and then difference between wild flowers and garden flowers. We have spent lots of time outside in the school gardens weeding and tidying up the flower beds which was lots of fun.

In maths this week, we started the week by using standard units to measure lengths or widths of objects as well as compare the mass of different objects. We used the terminology ‘heavier’ and ‘lighter’ to compare the weight and then used the weighing scales to check if our comparisons were correct. We then move onto recognising and comparing the volume of different containers. We used the vocabulary “empty”, “nearly empty”, “nearly full” and “full” to compare the capacity of the water and solved some measuring problems.

In English this week, we read the book The Diary of a Spider. The children enjoyed the story and liked learning about the different characters. We practised verbally saying question and exclamation sentences and then had a go at writing exclamation and question sentences in our books. Next week, we will be looking at the features of a postcard and will then write our own postcard in the role of grandad spider from the story.

We have lots of exciting things happening next week! The children will be meeting their new teachers and having a look around their new classroom to help with the transition of Year 2. On Friday, we have Sports Day in the morning so no swimming lessons. Our final swimming lesson will take place on Friday 11th July.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.
