Feeling hot, hot hot!

What a sunny week it’s been! We have been lucky to have hot weather all week and it has been great seeing so many children with sunhats on. Thank you for applying sun cream to your children before school and making sure they come in with their water bottles. We are lucky that the majority of our playground is in the shade so there has been lots of places for the children to sit and cool down at playtimes. The children had another tennis lesson with Jamie this week and their third swimming lesson at the Hart Leisure Centre.

In maths this week, we have been working on the skill of bridging and the children have been using practical equipment to support them with this. They have been adding single digit numbers together, using their number bonds to bridge to the ten and then add on the rest. This is quite a tricky concept but the tens frames helped to support the children’s understanding and everyone did a great job! We also sang the number bond song during our lessons to help recall the different number bonds to 10, you can always singalong with your children at home!

In English this week, the children have been practising their reading comprehension skills. We have read fact files about Greta Thunberg and answered questions based on the text. The children practised reading the question carefully, verbally composed their answer and then wrote it down. We have practised writing persuasive sentences, trying to persuade the giants to stop destroying the forest. The children then wrote a letter to the giants in the role as Greta, persuading them to stop building so many factories and to look after the forest instead. Everyone did a great job and their writing was very persuasive!

In science, we have explored different seeds and tried to guess what they will eventually turn into. We learnt about what key things plants need to grow and paid a visit to the school gardens.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library books are changed on a Friday during our library time. The children are also welcome to change their books during lunchtimes when the library is open.

Dates:

Thursday 27th June – Swimming
