A Sunshine-Filled Penultimate Week!

It’s hard to believe we’re already in the penultimate week for Year 2 at Tavistock Infant School! The days are flying by, and despite the heat, the children have been trying hard to remember their listening ears and their big smiles each day. It’s been an extremely warm week, and we’ve been making sure the children stay cool, hydrated, and shaded as much as possible.

We kicked off the week in style with a circus workshop, and what a fabulous way it was to start! The children had the opportunity to try out a range of circus skills including stilts, diablos, plate-spinning and hula hoops. There were lots of wobbles, laughter and proud smiles as they tried out new skills.

On Wednesday, we welcomed lots of you into the classroom for our second Giants in School day and what a fantastic day it was! It was lovely to see so many of you getting stuck into our DT activity alongside your children. Together, you helped design and build drawbridges with a working winding mechanism. The creativity and teamwork on show were just brilliant. Having all those extra helping hands in the classroom made such a difference. Some of you even stayed for lunch– and the pizza was definitely a hit! Thank you so much to everyone who joined us. The children absolutely loved sharing their learning with you – their faces were beaming all day. We imagine quite a few of you needed a lie-down afterwards or a big bucket of tea (I know myself and Mrs Gadd were in need of both!)

In Maths this week, our focus has been on measurement and estimation. The children have been learning how to measure objects accurately using rulers, practising both centimetres and metres. They began by measuring smaller items around the classroom, then worked in groups to use metre sticks for measuring larger objects like tables, bookshelves and even doors!

We also celebrated the Year 2 Leavers’ Party this week – and what a celebration it was! A massive thank you goes to our wonderful TAFF ladies who put so much effort into organising the event. The children danced the evening away, enjoyed music, games, glitter face paints, and lots of laughter with their friends. It was a perfect way to mark their final weeks at Tavistock and to make some special memories together.

To round off the week, the children took part in a sports workshop with Harvey, where they focused on their sending and receiving skills. Working individually, in pairs and in small groups, they practised throwing, catching, rolling and bouncing with great concentration and enthusiasm. It was a brilliant way to stay active, build teamwork, and burn off some energy in the sunshine!

Next week is our final week of Year 2 – we can hardly believe it! As we prepare to say goodbye, we’ll be sending some special things home with the children, including their books and work from across the year. Please send your child in with two named carrier bags on Thursday so they can bring everything home safely. Thank you in advance for your help with this!

It is our Leavers Assemblies next week. Please remember that children can wear party clothes to school on the day of the performances. The performances will be around 30 mins and will start from 9am (ish!)

Squirrels – Monday 14th July 2025.

Moles – Tuesday 15th July 2025.

As always, thank you for your continued support and for being such a big part of your child’s learning journey. We’ve had a very busy week, and we’re looking forward to a special final few days together next week.
