Year 2 Autumn Blog
Hello everyone!
Welcome to Year 2 and the Year 2 Blog. This year we are doing things slightly differently and writing our blog at the beginning of each half term to give you an overview of what we’ll be learning and getting up to in Squirrel and Mole class.
The children have settled in beautifully and have got used to their new routines and structure of their day quickly which is fabulous, so well done Year 2!
Home reading books and diaries were given out a couple of weeks ago and reading is well under way in class. Reading is such an important life skill as well as being a source of pleasure to so many of us, so please support us in listening to your child read their home reading book and signing the diary several times a week. Of course, it goes without saying that your child can read other books of their choice as well as their home reader.
As The Animal Kingdom is our over riding topic this term, our English and afternoon topic work is based around the wonderful world of animals. In English this half term, we will be writing a descriptive animal booklet, a narrative based on Incy Wincy Spider as well as a riddle. Writing riddles always proves to be a favourite as we all try to outwit each other!
In maths, we are working hard on place value and where numbers belong in the number system. We are thinking about what we know about numbers, how many digits? How many tens/ones? Is it odd or even? Where would I put it on a number line/hundred square? One more or one less of a given number? Partitioning is also being learnt about with part, part, whole. The classroom always seems extra busy in maths lessons as children gather the resources they need and talk to each other about problem solving. As a teacher, it’s wonderful to take a small step back and see the children well and truly in action.
Our afternoons will be filled with topic work and this term we are going to be enjoying geography, music, science and art as well as Enrichment on Wednesday afternoons. Squirrels will be gardening and learning about food and nutrition and Moles will be learning to play the ukulele with Mrs White from Hampshire Music Service.
I know the weeks are just going to fly by and before we know it, I’ll be writing the blog for next half term. I’d like to finish up just by adding a couple of reminders:
Reading books and diaries to be in school every day.
Water bottles in school every day.
Children should be eating the school snack unless pre-arranged with the class teacher.
Please name all children’s clothing!
I think that’s it for now, we really look forward to working with you all and thank you for your support.
Kind regards,
The Year 2 Team.
